Those that are close to me and have been in my corner for a long time, know that Brittanee never had a real job in her life. She worked at the movie theater for a short stint and I think at Holiday World for a day or so. She kept telling me she didn't think she could work and go to school during high school (Bosse) or college (IU). In the summer I expected her to get a job, every summer it was always one excuse after the other. One of her major things is she refused to work in food service, ok I get that part, I wouldn't want any part of that either.
I was upset each summer when she didn't even "try" to find a summer job. Thankfully she was getting her child support, thanks to me for giving it to her and thanks to Roger for paying it.
When May was quickly approaching and she was going to be graduating from IU Bloomington with a degree in Public Health, Social Science and Medicine and Gerontology, I must admit I was a little worried that she would be living at home til she was 30 or beyond. She kept telling me with those 3 degrees she would need more schooling to be able to land a decent job.....and I am thinking what? Are you joking? More school? No working? How is this going to work? She was not getting child support after April 2012, I was still unemployed at the time, and I just didn't see how this was ever going to work.
Even though she was "walking" through the graduation ceremony in May, she still had to complete a 10 week internship in the public health area. She interviewed for a few places around here in Evansville, and got one that later backed out due to funding even though the internship was supposed to be with NO PAY.
She also was looking into CNA classes here at Ivy Tech while she was supposed to do her internship for those 10 weeks so she would have something to fall back on until she landed her a real job. When out of the blue, to me and her grandma, she got a call from WEBMD in Indy wanting to interview her for an internship she had put an application in on the whim with the chances of them calling her to be slim, very slim. She was all excited telling us about the interview, and all I am thinking is how on earth are you going to pay for an apartment to live in Indy?
Sure enough she was still in school at IU when she travelled up for the interview on a Friday. I will never forget the call, my mom and I were at the Newburgh Walmart when Brittanee called, said she thought the interview went very well and they love IU grads, most that work there are from IU. :) Then her phone beeped in she said she would call us right back. Within 10 minutes, she called us back, the HR lady from WEBMD was the one that beeped in already offering her the internship when she hadn't been away from that interview for even an hour. Wow! We were all excited about this opportunity. The best news of all is that she was told there were 2 positions for an internship and one may lead to a permanent position.
A whirlwind of events followed then, graduation, our trip to Myrtle Beach, then Brittanee had found an apartment in Brownsburg Indiana and moved there to start her internship at WEBMD. She had signed a 6 month lease til the end of October. The internship started late May and ended end of July. She found out she got the job, a permanent position, with great starting pay, lots of vacation time and many many perks.
Although, she doesn't want to stay in her current position forever, and it seems you can move up pretty fast, we are so proud of Brittanee! From going to not working, to living 4 hours away on her own, to landing a job right after college when so many of her friends are still looking and working jobs until they catch their break, and now she is buying herself some furniture for her new apartment. I am beaming just writing this! I am so proud of Brittanee!!
